The City of Kings Mountain has owned and operated our own electric utility system for over 120 years. We are a non-power agency member of ElecriCities as well as a full member of NC Public Power and the American Public Power Association (APPA).
Currently we service over 5000 electric customers. We operate three (3) substations, in which we receive our wholesale electric at a voltage of 12470/7200 volts. This same voltage is then transported over 200 miles of main distribution lines throughout our service area. These substations are state-of-the-art and are the backbone of our electric system.
In our delivery to our customers we are able to step down this voltage to offer delivery at less than 600 volts as well as offering more than 600 volts to our industrial customers if needed.
Updates
In the early 1990s, we added System Control and Data Advisory (SCADA). This system monitors and collects data on a minute by minute basis. In 2014 we begin the installation of an Automatic Meter Reading System, this systems is used to remotely read Electric, Natural Gas and Water meters. On January 1,2019 the City began receiving power under a new Purchase Power Agreement from Carolina Power Partners, this new wholesale contract has been a huge success and has stabilized our electric energy cost to allow us to offer some of the lowest rates in our region.
Maintenance
We have continued to make system improvements to our electrical and meter reading divisions to make for a more efficient system. The citizens of Kings Mountain can be proud of their electrical system. Our system is in great shape. Remaining aggressive in our tree trimming, system maintenance, etc., will continue to pay great dividends for our customers in the future.
