The City of Kings Mountain will receive a grant for $822,000 from the US Department of Transportation (DOT), (Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to build 34 EV charging ports at five public parking areas, less than a mile from Interstate 85 and US Highway 74. Locations of the new charging ports include City Hall, a central Business District, and the Public Works facility. Additionally, EV charging ports will be installed in two parking lots near Exit 5, of
I-85, an area that is a developing tourist and recreational destination that includes the Two Kings Casino owned by the Catawba Indian Nation.
The Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program (CFI Program) is a competitive grant program created by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to strategically deploy publicly accessible electric vehicle charging and alternative fueling infrastructure in the places people live and work – urban and rural areas alike – in addition to along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). CFI Program investments will make modern and sustainable infrastructure accessible to all drivers of electric, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas vehicles.
